Melanie Klein saw the paranoid‑schizoid and depressive positions as two fundamental emotional configurations that first emerge in infancy and continue to shape psychic life throughout adulthood. In the paranoid‑schizoid position, the infant’s fragile ego manages overwhelming impulses by splitting objects into “good” and “bad,” projecting intolerable feelings outward and experiencing persecutory anxiety. As development progresses, the infant begins to recognise that love and hate are directed toward the same object, entering the depressive position, where guilt, concern, and the wish to repair become possible. For Klein, healthy development involves a lifelong movement between these positions: the paranoid‑schizoid position provides early organisation, while the depressive position enables integration, empathy, and the capacity for stable relationships.
