Latency Children at Risk: The Ethical Dilemma of Cure
SIMON CREGEEN WILL GIVE A CASE STUDY OF AN ABUSED GIRL.
CASSIE: FROM VIOLENT ERUPTIONS TO GATHERING THOUGHTS
This is a condensed account of a psychoanalytic psychotherapy undertaken in a UK National Health Service, over 5 years with a young girl, who was taken into care by the Local Authority, due to severe neglect and violence between the parental couple, and towards Cassie and her siblings. Simon will discuss how in the process of being understood, there were developments in Cassie’s shifting states of mind, from predominantly narcissistic, violent and confused states, to a mind more securely shaped by trust, thoughtfulness and a clearer gender identity. After Simon’s presentation and discussion, there will be comments by Sino Arosi and Irene Chait, on the therapeutic and ethical issues of working with neglected and abused children in the South African context.
