CHILD PSYCHOTHERAPY READING & SUPERVISION GROUP

Today Child Psychotherapists are treating more disturbed children, children who have been exposed to trauma, abuse and neglect. Post the pandemic, children are more stressed, and due to previous restriction have missed out on important development milestones in schooling and socialising. In the modern world there are new and different social and technological realities, including the internet and new passionate about work with children, and is social discourses. We are living in a more stressful environment in South Africa, one that is unstable, less secure and at times violent, and with overburdened parents dealing with loss, insecurity and financial strain.

Children in therapy at this time can be difficult to treat. A fortnightly Child Psychotherapy Reading and Supervision Group, run by Irene Chait, will begin in May - Tuesday 7th and Tuesday 21st May, 7.30pm - 9pm. It will be twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Each participant will have the opportunity to current Chair of the IPCP (Institute od present their child cases for group discussion and supervision, that will be followed for the duration of the year. The seminars will give clinicians an opportunity to get an in- depth psychoanalytic understanding of the work focussing on transference, countertransference, the setting, assessment, the frame, resistance, and the clinicians role in relation to parents and school. Papers from two interesting recently published book will be studied:

Contemporary Child Psychotherapy, Integration and Imagination in Creative Clinical Practice - edited by Sue Reid and Jeane Magagna (2022).

Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis in in a Changing World. Children on the Edge. - edited by Catalina Bronstein and Sara Flanders (2023).

Clinicians can join for their own personal and professional development, or they can participate as part of The Institute of Psychodynamic Child Psychotherapy (IPCP) Certificate, fulfilling the requirements for the Clinical Module (attendance at 30 Group Supervision sessions, and at the end writing a clinical paper of a long- term child case).
